In This Moment: Podcast Club Discussion Questions

Our co-host, Janet M. Stovall, C.D.E., recently encouraged our listeners and DEI practitioners at large to consider starting a podcast club – similar to a book club, but focused on investigating the vibrant discussions happening about DEI and management in the world of one of the fastest-growing forms of new media.

To support our audience in embarking on starting a podcasting club, Janet authored the below discussion questions about In This Moment for you to share with your podcast club.

Episode 1: The DEI Backlash – Corporate Cowardice or Calculated Strategy?

  • It seems like every day there’s another company scaling back on DEI. Is this really happening everywhere, or are we just more tuned into the bad news?
  • Khalil made a good point about some companies never really being that serious about DEI. How can we tell if our company is actually in it for the long haul, or just going through the motions?
  • It’s discouraging when companies like Meta and Amazon seem to be backtracking on DEI. What can we realistically do when our company’s actions don’t match what they’re saying?

Episode 3: The DEI Burnout – A Triple Threat

  • How can we tell if we or our coworkers are starting to burn out on DEI? What are the warning signs?
  • Let’s be real, some people are just tired of hearing about DEI. How can we explain it in a way that actually resonates with them?
  • DEI can be exhausting. What are some things we can do at work and at home to avoid burnout? How do we keep this work going without getting overwhelmed?
  • We need data to show that DEI is making a difference, but we also can’t ignore how inequity actually affects people. How do we balance those two things?

Episode 4: Identity Months – Celebration, Commodification, or Catalyst for Change?

  • Identity months shouldn’t just be about parties and pronouncements. How can we make them truly meaningful and impactful at our company?
  • Identity months are a chance for everyone to learn and grow. How can we use them to help everyone understand and appreciate different cultures, not just the people who identify with that specific group?
  • Khalil was right – we need to make history months relevant to everyone. Any ideas on how we can actually do that where we work?
